Lamar knows that there is a thin line between a pimp and prophet and he gives it to you straight in his trademark cadences. He both criticizes and humanizes the hood with an eye toward maintaining his own integrity as a human being who swings on a pendulum between a saint and sinner. Lamar is an around the way dude who recognizes both the upside (family, community, pride, hustler spirit etc.) of Compton and the tremendous challenges that make the city an urban leviathan. K-Dot is full of compassion and love, but ever aware of his own (and ours as well) capacity to hate and be full of indifference. What’s beautiful, however, is that he is not out to judge his peers, but simply to recognize himself in all of them as he strives to operate in his higher self and reach his fullest potential as an artist.
